Plastic products are considered as safe for use as food / drink packaging or container if the materials used comply with the safety standard set by the trustworthy authorized institution. What are the institutions reliable as the safety assurance standards?

Food & Drug Administration (FDA)

This is a United States institution administering foods and drugs. It regulates policy on the safety standard of plastics used as containers for preparing, storing and also serving foods. Besides, FDA regulates the maximum standard of indirect food additives content in the suitable packaging upon contact with human-consumed foods/drinks.

Society Of Plastic Industry (SPI)

SPI is a United States association of the companies dealing with plastics as their business. It reflects the representation of its members in regulating policy on plastic products excellence and then forwards the contribution given by plastics industry to people.

Drugs And Foods Supervising Institution (BPOM)

It is an Indonesian institution authorized to regulate as well as implement policy on drugs and foods supervision. It also supervises any packaging having contact with foods/drinks consumed by Indonesian people, such as plastic packaging. After supervision, it gives information and advice to the people about whether or not a packaging has the potential of being detrimental to health.

Food Safety Authority (EFSA)

This is a European Union authority having the task of giving scientific guide on any potential danger present in food packaging products. It has a wide range of scopes, one of them covering the direct/indirect effects of food and its packaging on human health.

Japan Hygienic Olefin And Styrene Plastics Association (JHOSPA)

It is a Japanese institution establishing the safe limit of plastic packaging materials having contact with foods and drinks.

Japan Food Safety Commission (JFSC)

It is another Japanese institution giving scientific guide on the safe limit of a product having contact with foods, this guide will subsequently be forwarded to consumers.
